ssrsousa: (listening)
Daniel didn’t have a beat, but he also didn’t have a car, which meant he walked around his neighborhood a lot. He sometimes took a ride-share or grabbed a lift in a patrol car, but he was equally likely to just walk to wherever he needed to go. Part of that was just a general interest in knowing what was going on and part was that he could. He could walk around freely, with no limping or crutch or knowing that every step he took was a step he couldn’t take later.

About six months ago, he’d noticed that some run-down houses just south of Orchard and Parliament were being demolished. Nothing much had happened for a little while, and then they’d put up a sign with a pretty picture of what the new buildings were going to look like. He’d liked that the apartments looked like the buildings they were surrounded by. They weren’t just modern glass cracker boxes. Of course, he had no idea if they’d actually look like that in the end, but he’d been happy to see the idea of it. He’d also been interested to see that they’d advertised accessible apartments right on the sign.

So he’d kept an eye on the apartments as they started getting built, and when they were done they actually did look like they belonged. They’d put up one of those Now Leasing signs a couple of weeks ago, and he’d made an appointment to see the accessible floor plan. He wasn’t specifically looking to move, but he was curious about what a new building considered accessible.

It turned out it was a really nice apartment, with two bathrooms and two bedrooms. One of the bathrooms had a fold down shower seat and the other one had a large, jetted tub. He could see himself wanting and needing both of those. The doorways were wide, the floors were smooth, and there was even a spot for a washer and dryer right off the kitchen. The leasing agent who gave him a tour didn’t ask why he was interested in the accessible apartment, which he also appreciated. They just showed him the different features and then left him to wander around a little bit.  Over the last couple of days, he’d crunched the numbers for the rent, furniture, and appliances. He’d ultimately decided he could make it work, if he decided to do it. He’d always been a frugal person and he’d also gotten a pretty good raise with his promotion.

The next thing he had to do was talk to Tom about it. They spent more nights than not together at one or the other’s apartment, so it would be a pretty big change if he moved out of Dimera. The new potential apartment was only a few blocks away, but in the rain or the snow, that would be a lot more annoying than going up or down three flights of stairs. There was a little part of him that wondered if Tom would be willing to move too. He’d like it if Tom did, for a lot of reasons.

He didn’t want to have a conversation about this where anyone could hear them, so he’d suggested to Tom that they have lunch in Daniel’s apartment. If the conversation went well enough, maybe he could even take Tom over and show him the apartment afterwards. He had the leasing agent’s number to arrange for the apartment to be open if he needed to do that. They were just finishing up their lunch and talking about nothing in particular when he decided to bring the subject up.

“Did you notice someone finally did something about those run-down houses a couple blocks south of the high school?”
